Today in S.S we started off by watching two short videos; Japan’s vending machines, and their etiquette. Did you know that some of the vending machines in Japan have/do..?

  • Soup Machines (Soup is hot!)
  • Lighter Machines
  • Business Card Machines
  • Fast Food Machines
  • Tissue Paper Machines
  • Machines in Car Garages
  • Shoe Cleaning!

After that short 2 minute video, we watched one on Japan’s Etiquette.

Did you know that good forms of Etiquette are..?

  • To be nice
  • Don’t blow nose in public
  • Don’t point
  • Don’t count change
  • Don’t eat in public
  • Bowing
  • No shoes indoors

[20 is drinking age]

After those we started working on the country we’re actually studying, Mexico. We read page 546 about Latin America. Latin America and an American country that is Spanish speaking because of their strong influence from Spain.  We also took a look at the major poverty in the barrios, which is where squatters basically live.

The people in the barrios basically have houses built with ANYTHING they can find. They aren’t exactly great living conditions. Then we talked about adobes. They aren’t the highest living conditions, but they are pretty good.

Tonight’s homework is to study for test, you must know all the countries of South America and the major islands of the caribbean. You do NOT have to know the capitals. You can study on ilike2learn.com. We also have to finish the “Mexico Today” questions you were given in class.

Science Scribe Post 5/3/07

May 6, 2007

Today in our science class, we started off by going over our two good sentences about the lab yesterday. We also received our reports on “Cars and Ramps” that were graded. When we all shared our sentences and looked at our grades, Mr.L said we were going to do three experiments.  First we filled a cup with water. We then took the temperature and it was 22 degrees. Mr.L then mixed some crystals from ice packs with it. We quickly noticed the declining temperature. The crystals trap the heat and take it away from our injuries. There is alot of heat when you hurt yourself, whether it be spraining your ankle or burning yourself, your body always releases heat. After discussing that, we filled two flasks with water. We then added Epsom salts to one, and washing soap to another. Two people then agitated it. After it dissolved, we noticed it disappeared. But, did it really disappear? No, it didn’t. It just got mixed in with the water. Then we poured the washing soap mixture into the Epsom Salt mixture. The water with washing soup in it changed into it’s original saltish figure. Tonight’s homework is to write two sentences on how the different chemical reactions release energy.

Rules That Should Be Removed

May 5, 2007

Have you noticed how many rules we have in our school? Yeah, some should be there, but there are a few unnecessary ones.

 RULE ONE; No flip-flops

Everyone knows that we aren’t allowed to have flip-flops. But why can’t we? There isn’t any good reason except people can step on the backs of them, but the only way people can do that is if people have oversized flip-flops. My aunt works at a neighboring school and everyone there has the option to wear flip-flops. Plus, they are great for the summer time. If people are afraid they’ll trip and fall in them, they shouldn’t wear them at all. If the school changes this rule, we should tell the kids that they have to bring a spare pair of shoes in case they have something going on or they are abusing the privelage.

 RULE TWO; No pajama/lounge pants

Now this one absolutely positively makes no sense to me! What’s wrong with pants? So what if they’re more comfy and have weird designs, there’s absolutely no reason for us not to be able to wear them. I mean if we’re in school for 6 1/2 hours, we should atleast be comfortable.

RULE THREE; No iPods or MP3 players

This one makes sense at certain times. If your blasting your iPod during the middle of class, that’s just stupid, but I mean at times at lunch or recess or even the bus it makes sense. Lets say if you finish your lunch early and your bored, listen to your iPod! If you get in trouble you aren’t aloud to use it for like a month. On the bus it makes perfectly good sense because some kids end up waiting 45 minutes on the bus just sitting, but you could be listening to your iPod. Yeah, everyone knows there valuable, but what if everyone who wanted to bring one had to have their parent/guardian sign a sheet saying that they know the dangers of bringing an iPod. That is the price to pay for listening to some good tunes.

RULE LAST AND FINAL; No gum.

Again with the iPods, this rule makes sense at times. If your chomping down on your gum during the middle of class and it’s annoying everyone, the teacher has the right to tell you to spit it out. Sometimes, gum actually helps students concentrate on school work instead of the mid-day hungers. If we’re aloud to have cough drops we should be aloud to have gum.

If you agree with me, leave a comment and tell me.

Today in S.S we took our China test. Most questions were multiple choice, although there was some open ended questions and short answer. After the test, we took a look at a handout titled “Pollution Hits China’s Farmland”. The main idea was the work to be done on this hazardous problem. There is no homework tonight, but tonight is the dance! Enjoy!

If you lost you handout, you can get another one here.

Today in science, we talked about energy some more. We went over our vocabulary sheets, and mostly focused on Kinetic energy & Potential energy. Potential energy is stored energy that is waiting to be released into Kinetic energy. After we went over that a couple times with different examples, we went to Mr.L’s table and watched him show energy transformation.

This is the tool we experimented with:

An energy transforming pendulum.

We also looked at a tool Mr.L hand made with some yardsticks, tape, and a three ping pong balls. He flicked the one on the end while holding the middle one down and the other one got transformed energy from the first one and it went down the yardsticks very fast. After the demonstrations were done, we took a look at the front of the room and watched Mr.L drop a golf ball. It bounced back up. He said he had the potential before he dropped it and the Kinetic Energy while it was bouncing. We then split up into table groups with a tennis ball, rubber ball, ping pong ball, and a golf ball. We had to drop it and measure in centimeters how high it went back up. Tomorrow we will finish the sheet. For homework tonight we have to describe the process of making toast in a toaster (what kinds of energy is used). You can get creative and add pictures or a decoration.

Funny things that Mr.L did in class that I didn’t mention…

  • Danced with Ms.C (vice principal) to show Potential & Kinetic energy.
  • Dragged Austin across the room.

Virginia Tech; Our hearts are with you

If you have seen the news lately, you may have heard about this tragic incident. Thirty two people were killed when a man shot them.  The gunman then shot himself, commiting suicide. This shooting, is the deadliest in U.S history. One man actually survived by playing dead. If you want to learn more, you can probably google “Virginia Tech Shooting”.

Daughtry; The rock band.

April 5, 2007

Daughtry, is a top hit rock group. Daughtry, is Chris Daughtry’s last name from American Idol. Everyone was shocked when Katharine McPhee knocked him out.

After they found out, everyone was devastated, even Chris himself. There has been some debating that American Idol was rigged that night, but there has been no proven verdict. I think Chris would have won it, if he didn’t get voted off that night. But, like some of the other American Idol contestants, he did not just give up. He had many bands ask him to be a lead singer in their band while he was still in American Idol, but he denied them. After American Idol, he formed a group known as “Daughtry”. Daughtry sings meaningful songs such as the song “All These Lives” which is about kidnapped children. It’s funny because although Katharine won second place, Chris’s new CD is on the top hits list. Two of his songs are on the top 100 on iTunes, and they only put the most bought songs on there.

“All These Lives by Daughtry Lyrics.”

Doesn’t come down when she calls,
“It’s time for breakfast.”
Momma can’t get down those halls
Fast enough to see
Glass is sprayed across the floor
From the broken window.
She can’t breathe anymore.
Can’t deny what we know.

They’re gonna find you, just believe.
You’re not a person; you’re a disease.

All these lives that you’ve been taking,
Deep inside, my heart is breaking.
Broken homes from separation.
Don’t you know it’s violation?
It’s so wrong, but you’ll see.
Never gonna let you take my world from me.
The world outside these walls may know you’re breathing,
But you ain’t comin’ in.
You ain’t comin’ in.

Posters hung on building walls
Of missing faces.
Months go by without the cause,
The clues, or traces.

Shed the light on all the ones who never thought they would become
A father, mother asking why this world can be so cold.

Doesn’t come down when she calls,
“It’s time for breakfast.”
The memories begin to fall.
She asks, “When will I be free?”

All these lives that you’ve been taking,
Deep inside, my heart is breaking.
All these lives that you’ve been taking,
Deep inside, my heart is breaking.
All these lives that you’ve been taking,
Deep inside, my heart is breaking.
The world outside these walls may know you’re breathing,
The world outside these walls may know you’re breathing,
But you ain’t comin’ in.

Science Scribe Post 3/7/07

We started off our Respiration Science Class by going over our homework (Pages 9&10). While going over Respiration, we learned about the equation,

Mr. L explained how the equation that is on the left of the energy is the same as the equation on the right of the energy, it is just mixed up differently. He dazzled us all by lighting a match and explaining that the smoke is like CO2 and H20, The fire is like the energy, and the left overs when the match was blown out was like waste. The parts are very similar to your body. We then took a look at the sheet Mr.L gave us titled “The Real Respiration”.

This is what it looks like:

“Say you ate one granola bar,” says Mr.L, “One granola bar will give you little energy and little waste.” Mr. L lit one match and a few seconds later he blew it out. There was a little smoke, but not alot. “Now, say you eat four granola bars,” says Mr.L, “You will make more energy and more waste.” He lit four matches together and a big flame spurted. It slowly died down until Mr.L blew it out. We all noticed that there was MUCH more smoke.

Tonight for homework we have to finish any unfinished classwork which is to write four sentences in cursive on the back of “Real Respiration” about the process in the diagram.

                             Extra Info

  • Did you know that blood cells go 6 to 7 per minute around the body but it has to take the fastest path?
  •  Did you know that the Mitochondia zaps the Vacuole with all the supplies needed to make energy in it?

How well did you understand class? If you think you understood well, try answering these questions without looking them up.

What is diffusion?

What is respiration?

Today in S.S we started the movie Gandhi. Gandhi is about a man who stood up for the people in South Africa who were not white. He believed in a non-violent fight against the British. He would never give up. So far we have gotten to the part where he was burning the passes the Indians had to carry with them. He was beaten really badly, but he didn’t give up. He was amazed at how the British treated Indians. He wanted to fight back. I can’t wait for tomorrow’s part of the movie!

Five subject S.S essay

February 26, 2007
  • Subject One; Varanasi and The Ganges River

Culture and tradition is different all over the world, but in Varanasi it’s very different to us. If you lived in Varanasi you would find out that the sacred animal is a cow. (Mr. H, I bet you wouldn’t want to live there!)In India they have the second largest population in the world and the people speak over 700 different dialecs and languages. The Ganges river is a sacred river, so people believe that if they bathe and swim in the sacred waters, it will be holy and relieve them of their sins. Since it is so sacred, people go there to die and when they pass away, their ashes are thrown into the Ganges. So I bet right now your thinking, EWW, who would want to swim and bathe in that? Well remember, there are different   traditions all over the world and swimming and bathing in the Ganges, is one of India’s traditions. When I first heard that, I was wondering how they got down to the river. Did they just jump of the walls into the Ganges? Well no, there are over 100 steps, otherwise known as Ghats that lead down to the Ganges. Actually, Varanasi is the birth place of Buddhism and Hinduism. There is a special god that lives there, known as Shiva, the god of death. If India has so many people, wouldn’t some of them be poor? If so, why do they have so many railroad tracks? The reason they have railroad tracks is because Britain used to rule India, the Ganges, and Varanasi and they built many railroads going all over India. Don’t be fooled by their size, they are crowded! There are four people per compartment and fold down beds. I did some independent research and I found out that the name Varanasi is not a modern name, it is actually a fact that it lies between the Varuna River and the Assi River.

  • Subject two; The Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is one of the most romantic places, but only some of it is from it’s beauty. The Taj Mahal is also a tomb. The Shah of India had his wife (Mumtaz Mahal) pass away after giving birth to their fifteenth child. It was made in 1631 and it took 22 years to build with over 20,000 people building it! It is made of semi precious stone and it is beautiful. When the Shah passed away, he was placed next to his wife in the tomb. I did some independent research and found out that there is some despute over who designed the Taj Mahal since there was 20,000 builders.

  • Subject Three; Hindu Ceremonies

There is a god in India known as Krishna, and the people of India have celebrations for her which feature, free food and face painting.  The people of India touch fire because they believe it gives them blessings. This may seem odd, but remember that every place around the world has different traditions. They also have another term, which we use in America too, known as Karma. Karma is an action you did before depending it is good or bad. If it’s bad you will usually have bad luck, and if it’s good you will usually have good luck. An act of good Karma for people in India is sending a candle down a river.

  • Subject Four; Delhi (Old and new)

I did some independent research and found out that Delhi is the second largest metropolis in India while Mumbai takes first place with 13 million people. It’s located in Northern India on the banks of River Yamuna. Delhi was given it’s own legislative assembly with limited powers.

  • Subject Five;Corbett National Park

Corbett National Park is India’s oldest National Park and it is located in Ramnagar Uttarakhand. It is known for it’s diverse wildlife. The park was established on August 8, 1936. At first it was known as Hailey National Park. About 20 people are killed by tigers in one year alone! Amazingly, the way to get on elephants is by their trunks!

This site has great pictures and info!

Today my class was the first one in L.A, and Mrs. Ekstrom had car trouble so we started off the beginning of the class a little shakey. (Thats a compound sentence) Luckily, we had no homework because she left her agenda at home!  Anyways, we worked on the back of the sheets we recieved on Friday, although many people (like me) forgot our sheets.  We also talked about compound and simple sentences a little more, and we also talked about the words that go in the middle of two thoughts (and, but,or,yet, nor, ect).

What do you think? #2

How quickly can you find out what is unusual about this paragraph? It looks so ordinary that you would think that nothing was wrong with it at all, and in fact, nothing is. But it is unusual. Why? If you study it and think about it you may find out, but I am not going to assist you in any way. You must do it without coaching. No doubt if you work at it for long, it will dawn on you. I don’t know. Now, go to work and try your luck.

The History Of Gatorade

February 4, 2007

Have you ever seen that commercial where the doctors in Florida talk about how they discovered Gatorade and how it improved the Florida Gators football playing? Well there are two sides of the story about who and how it was created.

 Story One:

Gatorade was supposedly made by a few Florida doctors in order to improve the Florida Gators playing since it was so hot there. (Hence the name Gatorade). So in 1965 the assistant coach of the gators sat down with a team of physicians about why the heat was affecting so many players on his team. The physicans came up with two reasons their playing was affected. The first reason was that all the electrolytes the players were losing through sweat never got replaced. The second reason was that all the carbohydrates the players used for energy were not getting replaced either. The physicans then went into the lab, making an electrolyte and carbohydrate sports drink known now as gatorade. Then in 1967 the physicans brought their concoction to the players and they started to win, game by game. Then they did something that would change their school forever. They one the first “Orange Bowl” that the school has ever won. Word spreaded fast about this new invention and soon all colleges were ordering it for their players. Thats the story of gatorade.

Or is it?

Story two:

Although Gatorade was still made in Florida, there was some arguing over who thought of it first. The team doctor for the FSU football team thought of a drink to prevent cramping and to keep the players hydrated. He titled it “Seminole Firewater” in 1962 (Three years earlier than Gatorade). He then realized since it kept the players more hydrated it would make their playing better. After it being tested by the Florida Gators, they named it Gatorade. Then the physicians requested a patent for “their” drink in 1967. So they used the drink the team doctor freely shared with the public to make millions.

Who’s story do you believe?

There is actually 31 flavors,  but trust me there is more but some of them are discontinued or not available in the U.S.A.

Information from Gatorade.com and Wikipedia

Crude Awakening; Is this the end of the oil?

January 22, 2007

Note: Golden bricks are italicised.

Is this the end of the oil? Geophysicists have been wondering that same question. M. King Hubbert’s, Geophysicist said “Our ignorance is not so vast as our failure to use on what we already know.” For years we have relied on oil to transport us and make many things such as toothpaste, tires, tennis rackets, and trash bags. Oil is one of the most important items in the world. Without oil/liquid petroleum, there may be some ups and some downs. If you think about how much the world needs oil, you will think of how much it is used. Since the whole world needs it, when it all runs out it may start many wars.  Well atleast we are prepared for when the oil runs out, because Luxembourg had already developed a car that doesn’t run on oil but runs on compressed air. It is called the MiniCat. The Middle East has developed something that will help them discuss the issue of oil. It is called OPEC and stands for Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. Algeria,Indonesia,Iran,Iraq,Kuwait,Libya, Nigeria,Qatar, Saudi Arabia, The United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela are in this organization. There is also non-OPEC countries that include the Gulf of Mexico, the North Sea,Norway,Russia,Canada, and the USA. Only 35% of the world’s oil is in the non-OPEC countries. It is expected to peak as early as  2015. Oil already provides 40% of the world’s energy. China and India are putting escalating demands on the global supply.

Luckily, the scientists are inventing more ways to control the oil supply and new ways to use energy.

Traveling Basketball Team

January 17, 2007

A whole bunch of girls and I are on the Basketball traveling team. Kat,Joslin,Brooke,Maggie,Emma, and I are the 6th graders on the team while there are a couple 5th graders too. We play more challenging teams and play by different rules. Some rules we play by are that you can press at all times and you sub in differently. It’s really tiring though. Last game I had, Emma,Kat, and I had a normal game for our normal team. There was a fire-drill half way through it and it took up 15 minutes of our game. Right after that Emma,Kat, and I had to rush over to our next game without stopping home. The games also seem longer and I really enjoy that because we all have more playing time.

Martin Luther King Jr.

January 16, 2007

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15,1929. Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist, he stood up for African American’s one no one else would. He was known as a great public speaker and was known for his “I have a dream” speech. In 1964, he was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work as a peacemaker, trying to stop violence between races. I don’t think everyone appreciates this holiday as much as they should. Most people think it’s just a day off from school but it’s much more than that. It’s the day Martin Luther King Jr. changed America.

Homework was to hand in your rough drafts for grading and final projects are due Tuesday.

Turkish Delight Recipe

January 10, 2007

Recipe for Turkish Delight

Ingredients

4 cups sugar
4 1/2 cups water
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 1/4 cups cornstarch
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 1/2 tablespoons rosewater
red food coloring (optional)
1 cup confectioners sugar

Introduction:
This appealing candy is easy to make at home. Rosewater can be found at specialty food stores. When the sugar syrup boils, coat the inside of the saucepan with a brush dipped in water to prevent sugar crystals from forming.

Makes 80 pieces.
Total time: 2 hours.

Step 1:
Oil a 9-inch square pan. Line with plastic wrap and oil the plastic wrap.

Step 2:
In a heavy saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar, 1 1/2 cups of the water, and the lemon juice. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture boils. Reduce the heat and simmer gently, without stirring, until the mixture reaches the soft-ball stage (240°F on a candy thermometer). Remove the pan from the heat.

Step 3:
In a second large heavy saucepan over medium heat, stir together 1 cup cornstarch and the cream of tartar. Gradually stir in the remaining 3 cups of water until no lumps remain. Stir constantly, until the mixture boils and is a thick, gluey paste.

Step 4:
Slowly pour the hot sugar, water, and lemon juice syrup into the cornstarch mixture, stirring constantly. Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring often to prevent sticking, for about 1 hour, or until the mixture has become a pale golden color.

Step 5:
Stir in the rosewater and tint as desired with food coloring. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Cool to room temperature and let stand, uncovered, overnight to set.

Step 6:
Sift the confectioners sugar and the remaining 1/4 cup cornstarch onto a large cutting board. Turn the Turkish delight out and cut into 1-inch squares with an oiled knife. Roll pieces in the sugar mixture to coat well. Store in an airtight container with sheets of waxed paper, dusted with the sugar mixture, separating every layer.

S.S Essay By Mariah Tuthill 6V

January 9, 2007

                                                January 9,1938

Dear Mimi,

I am writing to tell you about a despairing event that has recently happend. Kemal Ataturk, the father of the Turks has passed away. He changed so many things in our life, that made us modern. Although many of the men hated him getting rid of the fezzes, I believe inside everyone misses him. He also made it so us women could vote,go to school, and get jobs. One of the most important things he did was change our writing. Here are 29 of our letters in capitals

Science Scribe Post 1/4/07

January 4, 2007

In science today we observed Jake the Snake. We got another planning paper and took notes as Mr.L spoke. You had to write the life cycle, traits, instincts, and habitats of Jake. He also explained what happend to his curly tail and why that was an accident. For homework we are supposed to write a paragraph on Jake including all the elements needed.
